I met Shannon and Paul at High Park for their engagement photography. They told me all about the “best hot chocolate” in town at the restaurant in the park and I wish I had taken then up on the offer to join them now. It was an overcast day around 4pm and we just walked around for a couple of hours, chatted and took photos. Unfortunately, the fountains were operating, must be shut down at this time of year…….total bummer but that’s ok we didn’t need them with the way these two were together. I loved hearing all about their travels and how they met and some of the wedding details they had secured. I’m looking forward to your wedding now!
Journalistic photography engagements usually start by walking together so I can see how spontaneous you are.
I then start with a few basic poses to see where it leads. Some couples just interact naturally and some need a little direction until they get the idea that I want them to be loving and interact and not pose.
I’ll ask her to turn and basically walk around him and he needs to figure out how to hold her in every position. Some couples are super awkward and then they just get it.
It’s not about posing, it’s about placing two people together and seeing what happens and capturing every minute of it.
Sometimes they’ll look up at each other and then just burst out laughing
When you’re in a park it can be difficult to be creative and the variety will come from your couple and how good they are together.
The High Park Fountains weren’t operating this late in the fall, but the stone walls were still great.
I place them in one spot and ask her to walk around him.
Here she’s making her way around as I keep shooting the moments they have together.
Then I said to Shannon, “use your hands, your head and your heart and immediately I got this. This bride has incredible delicate hands that I must remember for the wedding day.
Once I told them that hands were a big part of beautiful photos they got it and the images just got better and better
Without the hands this wouldn’t be as powerful an image.
Details of an engagement session include hands and the ring.
